Jobs That May Be Gone in a Decade

By Barbara Pronin

The world may be shrinking, but so is the job market as more business and shopping is conducted online and robots are performing more of the chores that humans used to do.

Interpreting data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, business forecasters suggest seven jobs that are quickly disappearing from the nation’s job pool:

Drivers – While many of us may choose to drive personal vehicles 10 years from now, the age of driverless cars is upon us. Look for automation to reduce the payroll for ride-hailing services, long-haul trucking, buses and other public vehicles.

Farmers – The number of farmers has been shrinking for generations, but as technology makes it possible for more food to be grown by fewer people in smaller spaces, the ranks of traditional farmers will dwindle ever more rapidly.

Postal workers – Once a great option for a long and steady paycheck, the postal service is now pegged as one of the country’s fastest disappearing jobs, as emails and automated mail systems reduce the need for traditional mail carriers.

Jewelers – Globalization is taking jewelry-making overseas, where costs are cheaper. There are only 33,000 jewelers in America now, and their ranks are expected to shrink by 11 percent or more over the next decade.

Fishermen – Professional fishermen face threats to their jobs from imports of seafood and farm-raised fish, which is cheaper than wild-caught. Climate change and the issue of overfishing are adding to the loss of jobs.

Printers and publishers – As is evident from declining newspaper readership, the written word is taking a back seat to e-books, online news, and other forms of digital communication. We may always publish some books and periodicals, but there will be far fewer jobs in the industry going forward.

Broadcasters – For many of the same reasons, the need for broadcast journalists is shrinking. There is plenty of competition for far fewer spots and the pay for broadcasters is decreasing.
