How to Up Your Real Estate Photography Game

Photographing a home is not as easy as pointing your smartphone in the right direction. Capturing a residential space takes patience and strategy. Whether you're moving and shooting your space as a keepsake, or helping out your listing agent, below are several ways to up your real estate photo game.

Time it right. When shooting, avoid mid-day, where bright, harsh light can blow out your shot. Dusk or dawn, also known as magic hour, tends to provide the best natural light for shooting.

Stage it right. Make sure the area of your home that you're focusing on is properly staged, meaning clutter-free and well laid out.

Use a wide angle. Using a wide angle will allow you to capture more of your space. You can rent a range of wide-angle lenses for as cheap as $25 a day, and you can even find them for your iPhone.

Tweak your camera settings. If you're using a DSLR, the following should help: keep your shutter speed between 1/60 and ½ a second, your aperture between F8 and F11, and ISO under 400. Unsure what this means? You may want to hire a pro, or simply do a bit more research.

Try a tripod. A tripod can help stabilize your camera for a steadier shot. Tripods are also available at affordable day rental rates.
