5 Steps to Cleaner Indoor Air

While many of us think about air pollution outside the home, we spend much more time inside our houses, where the air may be less than fresh. Whether you're looking for the cleanest, freshest air inside your home, or you've been suffering from inexplicable allergies or extended flu-like symptoms, consider the following tips.

Battle mold. This is one of the leading problems of unhealthy air, as mold in your home can cause allergies, asthma and more. Tackle existing mold issues and fix any water leaks to prevent future mold from invading.

Tune up your carbon monoxide detector. This odorless gas causes flu-like symptoms, and carbon monoxide poisoning impacts thousands. If multiple family members are showing the same symptoms, but you all feel better away from home, carbon monoxide may be the culprit. Make sure you install a detector and keep it updated and active.   

Nix carpets. Carpets harbor dust mites, pet dander, dirt, fungi, mildew, and more. Plus, when you vacuum them, these pollutants may be released into the air. Switch to wood or tile floors which are easier to clean.  

Service venting systems. Dusty systems like AC and heating pump dirty air all around your home. Clean your fans, dehumidifiers and home systems regularly to make sure you're pumping clean air around your home.

Test for radon. Like CO, radon is another odorless gas that causes health problems. Found in soil and rock, this gas is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers, and can only be found through testing - which is easy and relatively inexpensive.
