5 Tips for Working with Your First REALTORⓇ
If you're ready to purchase your first home, chances are you're also working with your first real estate agent. After shopping around and interviewing several prospective agents, you found one you click with - congrats! Below are tips on creating a great working relationship with your agent.
Be ready to buy. This may seem obvious, but don't soak up too much of an agent's time if you know you're not ready to buy. This also includes getting a mortgage pre-approval early on in the process, so you can show sellers you're serious (and act fast) if you see a property you love.
Commit to one. It's standard practice for your agent to request exclusivity for a period of time while working with you, and this is a commitment you should honor. Why? Since agents work on commission, all the time they dedicate to your buying needs are based on the agreement that when it's time to make a sale, their hard work will pay off. So don't get cold feet when your agent slides you that exclusivity agreement.
Outline expectations. If you hope (or need) to be in a new home by a specific date, let your agent know early on, and they can tell you if it's doable, and help you stay on track. Likely, your agent will ask you this straight off the bat, so think hard about a realistic timeline.
Discuss communication. Some of us prefer text over email, email over phone, or phone above all else. If you have a preferred way of staying in communication, let your agent know. Likewise, if you prefer not to be contacted during certain hours, let your agent know.
Be courteous. Show common social courtesy when working with your agent - this is, afterall, a relationship. If you have an appointment with your agent, keep it, and be on time. If you see a property you love and leave a message with your agent, expect your agent to get back to you as soon as they can, but don't expect them to drop their entire day to show you the listing.
