How to Remove Household Rust
Is rust creeping along your window screens? How about your washer and dryer, outdoor furniture or your stainless steel appliances? Not only is rust unsightly, but it can seriously damage your property and minimize the lifespan of whatever it invades.
Read on for several ways to remove household rust. Pro tip: Grab a toothbrush for the application, as steel wool and other abrasive scrubbers can scratch and damage your ware—which could eventually make it easier for rust to return.
Vinegar bath. If your rusty items are small enough to be soaked in a tub of diluted white vinegar, this trick will remove rust without the need for scrubbing. It works best for tools, pots and pans. To utilize this trick on a larger item, first try soaking a rag in vinegar and wiping down your rusty item. If that doesn't do the trick, pour a layer of vinegar over the rusty patch and let sit.
Aluminum foil. If your toothbrush isn't making magic with the rust, soak your item in vinegar and then try a sheet of aluminum foil, which is gentler than steel wool but rougher than your toothbrush.
Salt and lime. This popular margarita mix can also dissolve rust off. Sprinkle salt over your rust spot, squeeze lime juice over the salt until saturated, let sit for several hours and gently remove.
Baking soda paste. Mix baking soda with enough water to create a paste, spread it on thick, let sit for an hour or more and use your toothbrush to slough off rust.
