5 Fall Home Maintenance Tasks to Tackle This Weekend

Weekend warriors, listen up. Fall is a great time to tackle a few DIY home-care tasks, including the following five.

Check the smoke alarms. Did you know that you're supposed to swap out your smoke alarm batteries once every six months? Don't wait for that "low battery" chirp. Stock your alarms with fresh batteries this weekend and score some peace of mind.

Trim trees. Before the leaves begin to turn, trim or prune any overgrown or dying branches. Pay special mind to branches hanging dangerously over your house, and call in the pros if any branches are dangling over power lines. This will keep you safe during storms, and minimize the amount of leaves you'll be raking.

Examine your exterior water sources. If you've already closed your gardens, it's time to drain your outdoor faucets to prevent your pipes from freezing. Close your shut-off valves, and pack away your hoses and sprinklers to save them from the frost.

Mulch your plants. Did you know that a fresh layer of mulch can act like a winter sweater for your plants? Grab a few bags from the garden center and keep your plants cozy until spring.

Clean your AC units. If you haven't already covered or removed your AC units, the time is now. Make sure to clean your AC units before you cover or store them. This way, they'll be in prime condition when you pull them out next spring.
