Caring for Your Tile Floor

Nothing looks fresher than a gleaming tile floor. But most tile is placed in high traffic areas of the home, like the kitchen and bathroom, meaning they can look tired in no time. If you're hoping to make your tile floor shine, the following steps can help.

Sweep. Sweep or vacuum your tile to get up any harmful debris that could scratch the surface when you rub the floor with a mop.

Clean with vinegar. No need for fancy cleaning products. Simply mix 1/4 cup of white vinegar with one gallon of warm water in a large bucket. Use a mop or rags to clean your floor, then repeat with a bucket of plain water. Seriously filthy tiles? Up your vinegar ratio to 1 cup for each gallon of water.

Polish. Most tiles don't need wax to shine, and many can even be harmed by chemical finishing agents. After you wash, a simple floor buff will do the trick.

Repeat. For shining tile floors, clean and polish every other month or more if your floor is in a high traffic area like the kitchen.

Prevent scuffs. For ceramic tiles, prevent future scuffs by placing floor mats over high traffic areas, like door entryways, or the spot in front of the stove or sink.
