8 Ways to 'Green' Your Home
In today's economy, home buyers are looking more closely at the associated costs that come along with homeownership, such as heating and electricity bills. The last thing consumers want in this economy is skyrocketing bills. By implementing some easy, but key energy and water saving options, homeowners can lower utility costs and make their home a bit more "green." Marc Roth, President and founder of Home Warranty of America suggests the following green tips: -Replace regular light bulbs in permanent fixtures with compact fluorescent light bulbs, which use about 1/5th as much energy as regular bulbs and last 12 times longer. -Install low-flow showerheads to save on water heating and use. -Close the damper on the fireplace. While this is simple, most homeowners often forget. -Seal basement rim joists. This is along the top of the basement wall where the cement or block comes in contact with the wood frame, a common area of air leakage. -Insulate water heater tanks for energy savings. -Perform duct sealing or hire a contractor. Twenty percent of the air that moves through the duct system is lost due to leaks, holes and poorly connected ducts. -Add insulation to an attic. -Install a programmable thermostat so you are not wasting energy while out of the house.
