Sofa Stats: How Are Americans Furnishing Their Homes?

By Zoe Eisenberg

When it comes to home decor, styles vary widely, but how exactly are Americans shopping for their home furnishings?

A new ImproveNet survey explores just how Americans deck out their spaces, specifically focusing on furniture, and the results were surprising. To gather results, the team at ImproveNet surveyed 1,850 Americans ranging in age from 18 to 68.

New vs. used. According to the survey, some 84 percent of American consumers buy their furniture new.

In-store vs. online. While Americans love shopping online, home furnishings may be one of the few areas that in-store visits score higher, with only 26 percent of survey respondents shopping for furnishings online, and 74 percent tackling purchases in person. It's no surprise, then, that the most common source of design inspiration in 2019 comes from in-store displays.

Buying vs. renting. Surprisingly, only 18 percent of respondents have ever rented furniture, with the majority opting to purchase. Despite this, only 19 percent of respondents currently have furniture-related debt.

Sofa wins. Surprisingly, the sofa was the top item American consumers will spend more money on, followed, in order, by the mattress, the TV, the fridge and a dining set.
The graphic below illustrates just how satisfied Americans are with their home decor overall:
