Construction Dips in June, Driven by Multifamily Softening

After a disappointing May, building continued to falter in June, with 0.9 percent fewer housing starts year-over-year, the Commerce Department reported this week. In June, there were a combined 1.25 million housing starts, with 396,000 in the multifamily sector and 847,000 single-family, the latter rising 3.5 percent.
 
Approvals for builds dropped 6.1 percent month-over-month and 6.6 percent year-over-year, at 1.22 million. Approvals in the single-family space totaled 813,000, 0.4 percent higher month-over-month, and approvals for multifamily starts totaled 360,000.
 
At 1.16 million, completions reversed, as well, down 4.8 percent month-over-month and 3.7 percent year-over-year. Completions in the single-family spaced totaled 870,000, down 1.8 percent month-over-month, and completions on multifamily starts totaled 283,000.
